Timeline
| When | What |
|---|---|
| Since 1958 | WASD added fluoride to drinking water, according to its website. |
| 2024 | WASD's 2024 report still described fluoridation at its plants. |
| May 29, 2025 | WASD stopped adding fluoride (Resolution R-370-25). |
| July 1, 2025 | Chapter 2025-22, Laws of Florida (SB 700), took effect. |
Because Opa-locka does not treat its own water, WASD's decision is what changed the fluoride in your tap.
What is left
WASD says fluoride is a naturally occurring mineral and trace amounts remain because of its presence in the groundwater source. The fluoride line in WASD's annual report shows measured levels; reports covering 2025 straddle the change, so check the sampling dates and footnotes. For a number from your own tap, use a certified laboratory.
Filters that reduce fluoride
- Reverse osmosis is a common method. Look for an NSF/ANSI 58 listing with a fluoride reduction claim on the exact model.
- Activated alumina is a specialty media for fluoride; results depend on pH and contact time.
- Standard carbon, including most pitchers, fridge filters and whole-home carbon, is generally not designed for fluoride.
Usually a kitchen decision
People who want less fluoride generally care about what they drink and cook with, so an under-sink RO system is the usual fit, in a house or a rental. Living Water's alkaline RO units are multi-stage systems with a remineralization stage that adds minerals back for taste. Ask Jorge for the certification documents on the exact model to confirm which reduction claims it carries.
Private wells
If a home uses a private well for drinking water, its fluoride level depends on the aquifer alone and was never affected by WASD's fluoridation. A certified lab test shows the actual level, and treatment, if wanted, is configured from the result.
Comparing fluoride claims
When you compare models, open the certifier's listing and confirm three things: that fluoride appears by name as a reduction claim, which standard it was tested under, and the rated capacity or replacement interval. Words like "purified" or "advanced filtration" on a box are not certification. If a seller cannot show you the listing for the exact model, keep looking.
Our position
We do not take a side on fluoride and health. WASD itself recommends talking with your dentist, pediatrician or healthcare provider about fluoride and dental health. Our job is to explain what each piece of equipment is certified to do. Call, text or WhatsApp (305) 793-5974 for a free in-home visit.
