The cheapest softener is the one you do not need
A softener quote should begin with a hardness number measured at your faucet. If that number is low, a cleaning routine and periodic descaling of small appliances may be all you need. If a quote recommends a softener without a measured number, ask for one. See hard water spots in Opa-locka.
Sizing
- Hardness and iron at your tap; iron uses up capacity.
- People and daily water use.
- Peak flow when showers, laundry and dishwasher overlap.
- For businesses: daily volume from water bills and the equipment involved.
An oversized softener regenerates less efficiently relative to what it costs, and an undersized one runs out of capacity during heavy use. Correct sizing is where most of the value in a softener quote sits.
Installation
| Setting | What affects the job |
|---|---|
| House | Main line access, drain, power, brine tank space, protection outdoors |
| Apartment | Rarely practical |
| Restaurant, laundry, car wash | Volume, layout, scheduling around operating hours |
| Softener plus filter | Equipment order and extra plumbing |
Running costs
- Salt type and estimated use at your hardness.
- Water used to regenerate.
- Resin life, especially on chloraminated water; ask whether a filter ahead of the softener is recommended to protect it.
- Service intervals and warranty on tank, resin and valve.
See the Florida softener cost guide.
Commercial users
For an Opa-locka car wash, laundry or kitchen, scale shows up as service calls, spotting and energy lost heating through mineral layers. Sizing from actual water bills and a measured hardness number avoids a unit that is too small, which shortens resin life, or too large, which costs more up front than it should.
Reading a softener quote
A softener quote you can trust shows the hardness that was measured and where, the household or business water use it assumes, the regeneration settings, and the salt use those settings imply. It should say whether a filter goes ahead of the softener and why. It should also list exclusions, such as drain work or electrical changes, and warranty terms for the tank, resin and control valve. If any of those are missing, ask before you sign. And if Jorge's test shows that a filter alone would serve you better, he will say so, even if that means a smaller job.
