What happens at the county plants
WASD's 2024 report describes lime treatment to reduce hardness at the Hialeah plant and an enhanced softening process at the John E. Preston plant, which in general serve northern Miami-Dade. Raw Biscayne Aquifer water from limestone is hard; much of that hardness is removed before the water ever reaches Opa-locka's distribution system. WASD also adds a phosphorus compound to reduce corrosion in pipes and household plumbing.
Who still benefits from softening
| Situation | Why |
|---|---|
| Restaurant, bakery or cafe | Hot water, dishwashers, steamers and ice machines amplify scale |
| Laundry or car wash | High volume; soap performance and spotting |
| Salon or gym | Water heaters running long hours |
| Home with measured high hardness | Heavy crust on fixtures, scale in the heater |
| Private well | No plant softening at all |
Living Water installs ion-exchange softening plants for homes and businesses such as restaurants, laundries, car washes, offices, schools and gyms.
How ion exchange works
Water passes through resin beads that swap calcium and magnesium for sodium or potassium. When the resin is loaded, the unit regenerates with brine and sends rinse water to a drain. It needs main-line access, a drain, power and space for a brine tank, which rules out most apartments.
Softener alone will not fix the taste
The most common complaint on Opa-locka city water is the chloramine taste and smell, and a softener does not touch it. If both hardness and taste matter, a filter can go ahead of the softener, which also protects the resin. See softener vs. filter in Opa-locka and salt-free vs. ion-exchange.
Installation and upkeep
- Location: on the main line, usually outdoors or in a utility room, after any filter.
- Drain: regeneration water needs an approved drain point.
- Salt: sodium or potassium, refilled on a schedule that depends on hardness and use.
- Service: periodic checks of the control valve and resin.
For a business, installation is planned around operating hours so the kitchen or laundry is not left without water. Ask for the regeneration settings and salt-use estimate in writing; the Florida softener cost guide lists more questions.
What Jorge checks
Hardness, iron, chloramine and pH at your tap, plus your daily water use and, for a business, the specific equipment you want to protect. If the numbers say no softener, he says so, and suggests simpler steps like descaling small appliances instead. Call, text or WhatsApp (305) 793-5974.
