Start with whether you need one
West Palm Beach describes its plant as a conventional lime softening facility, and its report does not publish a hardness figure. Measure at your tap. If the number is low, Jorge will say a softener is not worth buying, and point to what actually explains the spots or film you see.
A softener is one of the more common upsells in water treatment, and lime-softened water is exactly where it most often turns out to be unnecessary. On the island, the complaints people describe as hard water are frequently light spotting from dissolved solids, salt haze on outdoor glass, or iron stains from irrigation. None of those is fixed by a household softener.
Price drivers when you do
- Measured hardness and any iron.
- Household or business volume.
- Metered vs. timed regeneration.
- Drain, outlet and equipment location.
- Pre-treatment, if on a well.
Capacity is where quotes vary most. Ask how it was calculated from your measured hardness and your actual daily use, including seasonal peaks when the house is full.
Running costs
- Salt or potassium.
- Regeneration water.
- Resin life and service.

For a seasonal home, running costs follow occupancy: a metered unit uses salt and water when the house uses water, so months away cost little. Ask for expected salt use both in season and out.
Clubs, hotels and restaurants
Commercial kitchens, laundries and spas size softeners to daily volume and to the equipment being protected. Living Water installs ion-exchange softening plants for businesses, and the quote should list capacity, regeneration settings and expected salt use.
For a business, the cost of not softening is measured in equipment service and downtime, so the comparison is different from a home's.
Seasonal homes
A metered softener in a home that is closed for months uses little salt while idle, but should be checked on return. Ask how the settings handle low use.
Questions to ask
- What hardness did you measure, and in what units?
- Why this capacity?
- How much salt per month in season?
- Would a filter solve my actual complaint instead?
