What the mainland plant already did
Before the water crosses to the island, West Palm Beach's plant lime-softens it, filters it through carbon and sand, treats it with UV light and powdered activated carbon for taste and odor, and adds chloramine. The disinfectant is the part meant to stay in the water all the way to your house. A whole-home filter reduces it once the water is inside your property line.
Sizing for island homes
Palm Beach homes range from compact in-town cottages to estates with many bathrooms, staff quarters, guest houses and extensive pool and spa equipment. Sizing depends on:
- Peak flow: how many showers, tubs and fixtures can run at once.
- Whether guest houses or cabanas branch off before or after the main.
- Whether irrigation and pool fill share the line, and whether they should.
- Space for equipment in a garage, mechanical room or equipment yard, and any screening the property requires.
Chloramine needs contact time with the media. An undersized system lets more through when the house is full of guests.
What it does
- Reduces chlorine and chloramine at showers, sinks and laundry.
- Uses media designed for chloramine, such as catalytic carbon.
- Covers the city's summer free chlorine weeks too.
Living Water describes its Puronics Clarius iGen and Goodspring whole-home systems as removing chloramine and chlorine.
Seasonal homes
Many island residences sit empty for months. Ask how the system handles long idle periods, whether it should be flushed on your return, and who will do it. The water heater deserves the same attention; see rotten-egg smell.
Condos along South Ocean and the lake
In a condo, the building's main line is shared, so whole-home treatment is often not possible for a single unit. Under-sink RO is the usual choice; some units allow a point-of-entry filter where the unit's own supply line is accessible.
Whole-home or under-sink
| Main concern | Usually enough |
|---|---|
| Pool smell in showers | Whole-home |
| Taste at the kitchen and bar | Under-sink RO |
| Both | Whole-home plus RO |
