Lime softening at the plant
The Village's water quality page describes the process: MIEX pretreatment to remove organics, then lime softening to remove hardness, then chloramine and filtration. Lime softening has been part of the Village's treatment since the original plant was built in 1957, and the R.L. Pratt plant is replacing its lime feed system to keep that process running reliably.
Lime softening reduces hardness rather than eliminating it, and the 2025 report does not list a hardness figure. Your tap result is the number that matters.
For a home on Village water, that usually means the scale and spot problems people associate with hard water are milder than on raw well water in the same area. If you moved from a city that does not soften, or from a private well, the difference can be noticeable.
When a softener makes sense
- Private wells: raw surficial groundwater has not been lime-softened. See well water in Palm Springs.
- Businesses: restaurants, laundries, car washes, gyms and offices protecting water heaters, dishwashers, ice machines and boilers.
- A measured result: hardness high enough to explain the scale you see.
For businesses, the decision usually follows the equipment maker's recommended hardness. Compare that number with a test taken at the equipment's supply line, not with a general figure for the area.
When it does not
A chemical smell, pool-like taste, or dry-feeling skin points to chloramine, and a softener does nothing for it. That is a filter's job. See softener vs. filter in Palm Springs.
How ion exchange works
Resin beads trade calcium and magnesium for sodium or potassium. When full, the unit regenerates with brine and rinses to a drain. Metered valves regenerate based on actual use, which saves salt when hardness is moderate. A salt-free conditioner does not remove hardness; compare salt-free vs. ion exchange.
Before you buy
- Ask what hardness was measured at your tap, and in what units.
- Ask why that capacity.
- Confirm a drain and outlet nearby.
- Ask about monthly salt use.
See softener cost drivers in Palm Springs.
Ask, too, whether the person quoting measured hardness at your tap or assumed it.
Book a hardness test
Jorge tests hardness, iron, pH, TDS and chloramine at your tap for free, and will say plainly if you do not need a softener.
