The 2025 change
WASD's 2025 Water Quality Report says the Alexander Orr, Jr., John E. Preston and Hialeah plants discontinued adding fluoride as of June 6, 2025, under County Resolution R-370-25 (approved May 6, 2025) and Florida Senate Bill 700 (effective July 1, 2025). WASD says the change does not significantly affect treatment or compliance with standards.
County water vs. well water
| WASD water | Private well | |
|---|---|---|
| Added fluoride | None since June 6, 2025 | None |
| Natural fluoride | About 0.1 to 0.3 ppm, per WASD | Unknown until lab-tested |
| Where to find the number | WASD's annual report | Certified lab test |
Fluoride's maximum contaminant level is 4 ppm. Living Water takes no position on fluoride and gives no health advice about it; ask your dentist or doctor.
The report's own 2025 table shows a wider range because it includes readings from before fluoridation stopped. When you read it, look at the footnote that explains the change, and remember that the post-June figure is what is in the water now.
How fluoride is reduced
- Reverse osmosis at the drinking tap is a common method. Look for an NSF/ANSI 58 listing that includes fluoride.
- Standard carbon, including most pitchers and fridge filters, generally is not designed for it.
- Whole-house fluoride reduction is uncommon.
See under-sink RO in Palmetto Bay.
If you want fluoride reduced only in drinking and cooking water, a single RO at the kitchen sink is usually enough. Showers and laundry are not where most people want to treat for fluoride.
On a well
If your Palmetto Bay home drinks well water, RO for fluoride needs the same pretreatment any well RO needs, because iron and hardness shorten membrane life. The well's lab test tells you whether fluoride is even worth considering. See well water in Palmetto Bay.
Many well owners do not know their fluoride level at all, because the annual test the Florida Department of Health recommends focuses on bacteria and nitrate. If fluoride matters to you, ask the certified lab to add it to the analysis.
Before you buy
- Is the exact model certified for fluoride reduction?
- What is the filter and membrane schedule?
- How will it change dissolved minerals and pH?
