What PFAS are
PFAS (per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances) have been used in non-stick, stain-resistant and water-resistant products and some firefighting foams. They persist in the environment. EPA's PFAS pages explain the national drinking water standards and compliance timelines.
County water: WASD's PFAS table
WASD's 2025 Water Quality Report includes PFAS results for the main system, which the Orr plant feeds in this part of the county. It lists PFOS, PFOA, PFNA, PFHxS and a Hazard Index for a PFAS mixture. WASD says initial compliance monitoring is underway, that it is taking measures to meet the new limits on the federal schedule, and that compliance results will appear in reports beginning in 2027. Read the table on miamidade.gov and note the system and year for each result; WASD's water quality line is 786-552-4181. EPA also posts nationwide UCMR 5 data by water system.
Private wells: no utility data
Palmetto Bay still has private wells. A well's water is not part of WASD's monitoring, so the only way to know about PFAS is a certified lab test using EPA methods. The Florida Department of Health's annual well test focuses on bacteria and nitrate; PFAS is an additional, separate analysis to ask a lab about. See well water in Palmetto Bay.
Choosing a PFAS filter
- NSF/ANSI 53 (filters) or NSF/ANSI 58 (reverse osmosis) certification that names PFOA and PFOS reduction.
- The exact model number on the certifier's listing.
- Cartridge replacement on schedule.
Living Water does not claim its systems remove PFAS. Jorge will tell you to check any model's certification before buying, including anything he shows you.
Testing
Jorge's free in-home screening covers chlorine and chloramine, hardness, TDS, pH and iron, not PFAS. He can help you read WASD's table or a lab report in plain words. See home screening vs. lab analysis.
If you get a lab report for a well, bring it along; he can explain the units, the reporting limits and how the numbers compare with EPA's standards.Talk it through
