Do you need one?
- House on District 3BC water with a low hardness reading: probably not.
- Well water: often, as one stage of a well system.
- Business with hot water and equipment: often, sized by test.
Hollywood's 2025 report describes lime softening and membrane filtration for Biscayne water and reverse osmosis for Floridan water, which is why a home softener is often redundant on county water.
Price drivers
- Hardness and iron in your water.
- Daily volume, which sets capacity.
- Valve: metered regeneration based on actual use.
- Installation: drain, power, bypass, space for salt.
- Related stages on a well.
Businesses
Commercial softening is sized to the equipment and the busiest hours. A laundry, a car wash and a restaurant have different peaks. Living Water installs ion-exchange softening plants for businesses, and a good quote lists capacity, regeneration settings and expected salt use.
Running costs
- Salt or potassium.
- Regeneration water.
- Resin life and service.

Four questions for any softener quote
- What hardness did you measure?
- Why this size?
- How much salt per month?
- Would a filter solve my complaint instead?
Space and placement
A softener needs a level spot near the main line, a drain for regeneration, power for the valve and room to add salt. Outdoors, shade and weather protection help the equipment last. For a business, the location also needs to allow safe access for salt deliveries. These details affect installation time, and a good quote explains them.
Salt choice
Two kinds of salt are common: sodium chloride and potassium chloride. Potassium generally costs more per bag and may need different settings. Ask which the system is set up for and why.
