Chlorinated or chloraminated?
The city's 2025 report says its water is softened, filtered and chlorinated for disinfection, and its disinfectant table lists chloramine. Chloramine is made by combining chlorine with ammonia, so both statements describe the same approach. What matters at home is that the residual is chloramine most of the year.
The spring maintenance period
The city performs a chlorination preventive maintenance procedure on its distribution system. In 2026 it ran three weeks, March 22 to April 12, and the city told residents they might notice a slight chlorine taste or smell while the water continued to meet all standards. A filter designed for both chlorine and chloramine handles both periods.
Why ordinary carbon falls short
- Chloramine reacts more slowly with carbon than free chlorine does.
- It needs more contact time, which means more media or slower flow.
- Catalytic carbon is often used because it is better suited to chloramine.
- Pitchers and many fridge filters are rated for chlorine taste, not chloramine.
What to check before buying
- NSF/ANSI 42 includes a specific chloramine reduction claim; make sure the model lists chloramine, not only chlorine.
- NSF/ANSI 53 or 58 for specific contaminant claims on carbon or RO systems.
- The rated flow rate versus your household's peak use.
- The replacement or capacity schedule.

How long chloramine media lasts
Every carbon system has a capacity. In a busy Pembroke Pines household with several bathrooms, a small cartridge can be used up fast, especially with a chloramine residual around the city's 2.8 parts per million average. Signs it is time to replace or refresh media:
- The chemical smell returns in the shower.
- Coffee and tea taste off again.
- A test after the filter shows chlorine residual.
Ask how capacity was calculated for your home and what the replacement schedule is before you buy.
Choosing the scope
Bothered in the shower? Treat the whole house; Living Water describes its Puronics Clarius iGen and Goodspring systems as removing chlorine and chloramine. Only care about drinking water? An under-sink alkaline RO with carbon prefilters may be enough. See whole-home filtration in Pembroke Pines.
