The timeline in Pembroke Pines
- Before the ban: the city says it kept fluoride at or below 0.7 parts per million leaving the plant, and it was among 27 Broward County cities with public water systems actively fluoridating.
- May 15, 2025: SB 700 signed into law.
- By June 30, 2025: the city stopped purchasing fluoride and dosing remaining quantities.
- July 1, 2025: the ban took effect.
The 2025 Water Quality Report shows a 0.6 parts per million average for January to June 2025, the period before the change.
Natural fluoride
Fluoride is a naturally occurring ion in groundwater, rainwater, soil and foods, as the city itself points out. Ending the additive leaves whatever is naturally in the Biscayne Aquifer water after treatment. That level is lower than before, but not necessarily zero.
A certified lab can measure the exact level at your tap if that number matters to you.
What changes at your tap
The city has said the change is about the additive only; the rest of the treatment, from softening and filtering to chloramine disinfection, continues as before. In practice, most people notice no difference in taste or smell from the fluoride change. If you previously chose a filter specifically to reduce added fluoride, the remaining natural level may change your priorities, and a lab test is the most precise way to know your number. Boiling water does not remove fluoride.
Ways to reduce fluoride at home
| Method | Notes |
|---|---|
| Reverse osmosis | Common and effective method at a drinking tap; check the model's listing |
| Activated alumina | Specialty media used for fluoride |
| Standard carbon, pitchers, fridge filters | Generally not designed for fluoride |
The city's own fluoride page notes that fluoride is now widely available from other sources, such as toothpaste; your dentist can advise on what is right for your family.
A neutral page
We do not take a side on fluoride and health. That is a conversation for your dentist or doctor. Our role is to explain what the city reports, what remains in the water and what each system can and cannot do.
If RO is your route
Living Water's under-sink alkaline RO systems use a multi-stage design with a membrane and a remineralization stage. If fluoride reduction is your main goal, ask for the specific model's performance data and certification listing. See under-sink RO in Pembroke Pines and drinking water systems.
