What the plants already handle
Plantation's East and Central plants push Biscayne Aquifer water through thin film composite membranes that reject hardness minerals, color and odor compounds, then strip hydrogen sulfide and carbon dioxide over plastic media. That is more treatment than many South Florida homeowners expect. It also means a whole-home system in Plantation does not need to be a big multi-stage setup in most cases.
What is left for you to decide about
After the membranes, the city adds a small amount of chlorine and ammonia. Together they form chloramine, a longer-lasting disinfectant that protects water through storage and more than two million feet of water mains, according to the city's report. The residual ranged from 0.60 to 3.40 ppm in 2025, so on some days and streets you may notice it more than others.
Living Water describes its Puronics Clarius iGen and Goodspring whole-home systems as removing chlorine and chloramine. See the city water system page.
Sizing for a Plantation home
- Bathrooms and peak use: a four-bedroom pool home in the west part of the city uses water differently than a two-bedroom townhouse.
- Main line location: the system goes where water enters, typically near the meter side of the house.
- Irrigation: the city's report mentions homes with city water irrigation; those lines are usually bypassed so you are not filtering lawn water.
- Pool fill: some owners include it, some do not.
Why the taste can change from week to week
Because the residual ranged from 0.60 to 3.40 ppm over the year, the chlorine note in your glass is not constant. Homes near the end of a long run of pipe, or in a cul-de-sac where water sits longer, may notice different levels than homes near a main. A whole-home system evens this out, since it treats whatever level arrives at your meter.
Pair it with drinking water
A whole-home system improves every tap. For a dedicated drinking-water faucet, many Plantation families add under-sink alkaline RO. See whole-house filter vs. under-sink filter for how they differ.
Certification note
For chloramine, look for a system designed for it, with a listing that covers chloramine reduction. For any specific contaminant, the exact model must be certified under the relevant NSF/ANSI standard. The chloramine filter guide explains what to look for.
