What PFAS are
Per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances have been used since the 1940s and 1950s in coatings and products that resist heat, oil, stains, grease and water. They break down very slowly. EPA set national drinking water limits for several PFAS in April 2024, including 4 parts per trillion for PFOA and PFOS individually. EPA's PFAS pages explain the rule and its compliance timeline.
Where to see Pompano Beach's data
The 2025 Water Quality Report has a Voluntary Monitoring table listing quarterly 2025 results for PFOA, PFOS, PFHxS, PFNA and a PFAS Hazard Index, in nanograms per liter (parts per trillion), next to EPA's MCL for each. Read the table yourself and compare. The city says its water meets all current state and federal requirements, and its PFAS page lists what it is doing:
- Researching the best treatment technology.
- Planning expansion of the new membrane plant to replace the aging lime softening plant.
- Joining litigation against PFAS manufacturers to offset costs.
- Pursuing grants for the new plant.
Questions go to the Utilities Lab Manager at 954-545-7018. EPA also publishes UCMR 5 results by water system.
Choosing a PFAS filter
- Look for NSF/ANSI 53 (filters) or NSF/ANSI 58 (reverse osmosis) certification that specifically lists PFOA and PFOS reduction.
- Match the exact model number on the certifier's listing.
- Replace cartridges on schedule; claims hold only within rated capacity.
Living Water does not claim its systems remove PFAS. Jorge will tell you to verify certification for any model, including anything he shows you.
Testing for PFAS
PFAS testing requires a certified lab using EPA methods. Jorge's free in-home screening covers chloramine, hardness, TDS, pH and iron, not PFAS. He can help you read the city's table. See home screening vs. lab analysis.
Private wells and Broward County customers
If your Pompano Beach property uses a private well, no utility data covers it; only a lab test will. If you are a Broward County Water and Wastewater customer, look at Broward County's report rather than the city's. See well water.
Reading the table
Each row in the city's Voluntary Monitoring table gives the sampling dates, the average level detected, the range across samples, the MCL and the MCLG. Values are in nanograms per liter, which equals parts per trillion. The Hazard Index row combines several PFAS into one number that EPA compares against 1. EPA's rule gives water systems a compliance deadline in the future, and the city's planned membrane expansion is part of its response. If a row is unclear, ask the city lab, or ask Jorge to walk through it with you in plain words.
