What the city already does
Pompano Beach treats Biscayne Aquifer groundwater, which is naturally hard limestone water. The city's plants remove much of that hardness before the water reaches you: one plant uses lime softening and the other membrane softening. The city's answer to "What is the hardness of the water?" is short: typically 1 to 2 grains.
That is why a sales pitch built around "hard Florida water" may not apply to your Pompano Beach address. Test first.
When a softener still fits
- Private wells: untreated Biscayne Aquifer water can be hard, and well systems often include softening configured from the well test. See well water in Pompano Beach.
- Businesses: restaurants, hotels, laundries, car washes, gyms and schools sometimes need near-zero hardness for boilers, dishwashers or spot-free rinses. Living Water offers ion-exchange softening plants for these.
- Results that surprise: if your tap test shows higher hardness than expected, the reason is worth finding before buying anything.
Softener vs. filter: different jobs
A softener swaps hardness minerals for sodium or potassium. It does not target chloramine, which is the main thing Pompano Beach residents notice in taste and smell. A filter does the opposite. If both concerns exist, they are separate pieces of equipment. See softener vs. filter in Pompano Beach.
Sodium and salt questions
The city's 2025 report lists sodium at 24.9 ppm in the treated water. An ion-exchange softener adds sodium in proportion to the hardness it removes, so on water that is already soft the added amount is small, and on hard well water it is larger. If sodium matters to your household for any reason, ask your doctor, and consider potassium chloride or an RO drinking tap.
Salt-based vs. salt-free
Ion-exchange softeners remove hardness. Salt-free conditioners change how minerals behave but leave them in the water. Neither is a chloramine filter. Compare in salt-free conditioner vs. ion-exchange softener.
Questions to ask any softener seller in Pompano Beach
- What hardness did you measure at my tap, in grains per gallon?
- How does that compare with the city's typical 1 to 2 grains?
- What problem will the softener solve that I have today?
- How much salt and regeneration water will it use at my hardness?
- Do I also need a filter for chloramine, and is that a separate unit?
If the answers don't start with a measurement, keep looking. Jorge's test is free and takes the guesswork out, and he will say so plainly if your Pompano Beach home doesn't need a softener at all. For businesses, he also asks about the equipment manufacturer's water requirements, because a dishwasher, boiler or car wash rinse may need a different target than a household.
