What PFAS are
PFAS (per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances) resist water, grease and heat. They show up in cookware coatings, food packaging, outdoor gear, carpet treatments and some firefighting foams, and they break down very slowly. PFOA and PFOS are the most studied.
National drinking water rules for some PFAS are still being phased in, and monitoring requirements are changing. That means annual reports in the coming years may include information older reports did not.
Where to look for Riviera Beach's results
- The USD's annual report: the 2025 report lists regulated contaminants detected, such as disinfection byproducts, nitrate and lead and copper; it does not include PFAS results.
- The EPA's UCMR 5 program: the fifth Unregulated Contaminant Monitoring Rule required public systems of a certain size to test for 29 PFAS, and the EPA publishes the results by system. Riviera Beach's public water system ID is 4501229.
- The utility itself: call 561-845-4185 and ask what PFAS testing has been done and where results are posted.
When you call, useful questions include: has the system completed UCMR 5 sampling, were any PFAS detected, and how will future results be reported to customers? Those answers, not a salesperson's claim, are the basis for deciding whether PFAS treatment at home is a priority for you.
Treatment at the plant
The USD air-strips, lime-softens, disinfects and filters its water. Whether any of those steps affect PFAS is a question for the utility. The district plans a new treatment plant, with construction projected from spring 2026 to fall 2029; watch future reports for changes.
Choosing a home filter
- NSF/ANSI 53 (filters) or NSF/ANSI 58 (RO) certification listing PFOA and PFOS reduction.
- The exact model number on the certifier's listing.
- Filter changes on the certified schedule.
Living Water does not claim its systems remove PFAS. Verify the certification of anything you consider, including anything Jorge offers.
Wells
A private well is not covered by the USD's monitoring. PFAS testing needs a certified laboratory.
What a home visit covers
Jorge's free test covers chloramine, hardness, dissolved solids and pH; it is not a PFAS test. See home screening vs. lab analysis. Call, text or WhatsApp (305) 793-5974.
