What the county reports
The eastern 2025 table lists chlorine and chloramines with a highest running annual average of 3.04 ppm, computed quarterly from monthly averages, and individual results from 0.07 to 4.53 ppm. The county notes that the highest single result was 1 out of 3,573 samples. The maximum residual disinfectant level is 4 ppm as a running average. Your tap's reading depends on where you are in the system and when you test.
East vs. west
The county runs two regions. The eastern region, which includes Royal Palm Beach, uses chloramine. The western region around Belle Glade, Pahokee and South Bay stays on chlorine year-round. If you read the county report, make sure you are looking at the eastern data.
The twice-yearly switch
PBCWUD changes from chloramine to chlorine only twice a year to clean the pipes, and flushes hydrants at the same time. The county reminds customers that chlorine must be removed from water used for kidney dialysis and aquariums, as chloramine must. During those weeks you may notice a stronger chlorine smell.
Why basic carbon may fall short
- Chloramine is chlorine bound to ammonia and reacts more slowly with standard carbon.
- It needs longer contact time, so small fast-flow cartridges let more through.
- At around 3 ppm, small filters can be used up sooner than the label suggests.
What to look for
- Catalytic carbon or another media designed for chloramine.
- A chloramine reduction claim on the exact model's NSF/ANSI 42 listing; a chlorine taste and odor claim alone does not cover chloramine.
- Sizing to your home's peak flow.
Living Water describes its Puronics Clarius iGen and Goodspring whole-home systems as removing chloramine and chlorine. More in the chloramine filter guide.
Undersized filters are the most common reason people say a filter stopped working on county water. If a carbon cartridge seemed to help for a few weeks and then the smell came back, it was likely used up or too small for the flow.
Every tap or one tap
For the whole house, see whole-home filtration. For drinking water only, an under-sink RO with chloramine-capable carbon may be enough. If showers are the issue, read dry skin after showering.
Measure it
Jorge measures total chlorine at your tap and compares it with the county's numbers. Call, text or WhatsApp (305) 793-5974.
He can also test after the county's chlorine-only weeks so you can compare the two readings.
