What PFAS are
PFAS are a family of man-made chemicals used in nonstick, water-repellent and stain-resistant products and some firefighting foams. They persist in the environment. EPA has set national drinking water standards for several PFAS, including PFOA and PFOS, with monitoring and compliance phased in over several years.
Where to find results for Surfside
- WASD 2025 Water Quality Report: its additional contaminants table lists PFOS, PFOA, PFNA, PFHxS and a PFAS Hazard Index. The main system column describes the water WASD supplies, which the Town buys.
- Town of Surfside: as the system that delivers water to your home, the Town is the place to ask about its current annual report: Public Works, (305) 861-4863.
- EPA UCMR 5: nationwide PFAS data collected from public water systems.
The timeline in WASD's words
WASD explains that initial compliance monitoring is underway, that systems must report results in their water quality reports beginning with the 2027 reports, and that MCL violation reporting begins in 2029. WASD says it is taking measures to comply. Until then, the violation column in the PFAS table shows N/A. Units are parts per trillion, much smaller than the parts per million used elsewhere in the report.
Certification that matters
- NSF/ANSI 53: filters that reduce health-related contaminants; can include PFOA and PFOS.
- NSF/ANSI 58: reverse osmosis systems; can include PFOA and PFOS.
Certification belongs to an exact model number. Look it up in the certifier's database and confirm PFOA and PFOS appear, along with the rated capacity.
Our position
Living Water does not claim its systems remove PFAS. If PFAS is your concern, Jorge will walk you through drinking water options and show you how to check a certification listing for any model, including RO. PFAS testing requires a certified laboratory; the free in-home test covers taste, odor and scale factors.
Point-of-use for condos
In a Surfside condo, drinking water treatment happens at the kitchen sink. Whatever certified model you choose, change filters on schedule, since certified performance assumes it, and keep the model number and listing on file.
Questions to ask any seller
- Which exact model is certified, under 53 or 58?
- Are both PFOA and PFOS on the listing?
- What capacity is the certification based on, and when must filters be replaced?
- Does the certification cover the system as installed?
For condo kitchens, point-of-use treatment is where drinking water is usually addressed. See best drinking water system in Surfside, or call, text or WhatsApp Jorge at (305) 793-5974.
