The options compared
| Option | Good for | Limits |
|---|---|---|
| Pitcher filter | Taste, small households | Small capacity; many are designed for chlorine, not chloramine |
| Refrigerator filter | Convenience | Short contact time; check certification |
| Under-sink alkaline RO | Drinking and cooking water | One faucet; needs cabinet space and a drain |
| Whole-home city water system | Every tap and shower | Not a specific drinking water treatment; often paired with RO |
What Tamarac water calls for
Both Tamarac systems disinfect with chloramine (2025 averages of 2.73 ppm West and 2.15 ppm East), which is what most people taste. RO with carbon pre-filters handles that and also reduces dissolved solids. If you want reduction of a specific contaminant such as lead, fluoride or PFOA/PFOS, check that the exact model is certified for it under NSF/ANSI 58.
By household
- Condo or villa: under-sink RO; no building changes.
- Single-family home: under-sink RO, often with a whole-home system for showers.
- Part-year residents: ask about filter schedules that fit time away.
- Office or gym: RO sized for daily use.
Alkaline or standard
Living Water's under-sink system is alkaline RO, which adds minerals back for taste and raises pH. It is a taste preference, not a health treatment. See alkaline vs. standard RO.
Refrigerator and ice maker
An under-sink RO can usually feed the refrigerator water dispenser and ice maker too, so the water and ice taste the same. Jorge checks the route from the sink to the fridge during the visit.
Finally, think about who uses the kitchen. Grandchildren visiting, a caregiver, or a tenant all benefit from a dedicated faucet that is simple to use and does not need refilling.
Upkeep you can live with
The best system is one you will maintain. Pitchers need frequent cartridge changes; fridge filters need replacing on schedule; RO pre-filters, post-filters and the membrane each have their own schedule. Ask for a written plan before you buy, and if you spend summers away from Tamarac, plan filter changes around when you return.
Whatever you choose, ask what the replacement filters are, how they are ordered and who changes them.
