WEST MIAMI · FLUORIDE

Fluoride Water Filter in West Miami

Because West Miami buys its water from WASD, its fluoride status follows the county's: WASD stopped adding fluoride at its regional plants on June 6, 2025, and main-system levels since then range from 0.1 to 0.3 ppm from natural sources. If you want to reduce what remains, reverse osmosis is the most common home method, but only a model certified under NSF/ANSI 58 for fluoride reduction should be trusted. We stick to facts, not health claims for or against fluoride.

What changed in 2025

  • Miami-Dade Resolution No. R-370-25 approved May 6, 2025.
  • Florida Senate Bill 700 approved May 15, 2025, effective July 1, 2025.
  • WASD's Orr, Preston and Hialeah plants stopped adding fluoride June 6, 2025.

West Miami's own report does not test fluoride separately; the WASD report it posts is the place to look.

WASD says the change does not significantly affect treatment processes or compliance, and it attributes the remaining 0.1 to 0.3 ppm to naturally existing levels in the soil and the Biscayne Aquifer.

Because fluoride is no longer added, many households that once bought RO for fluoride now find their main reasons are taste, chloramine and dissolved solids. RO still addresses those; just be clear about which claims you are paying for and check each one on the listing.

Most households treat only drinking and cooking water for fluoride, because that is a small share of total use. A point-of-use RO at the kitchen sink is therefore the usual choice, while showers and laundry stay on unfiltered or whole-home carbon-filtered water.

Certification and upkeep

A fluoride claim must be on the exact model's listing. Performance depends on pressure and on timely membrane and pre-filter changes. Keep a log, and ask for a dissolved-solids check at service visits.

Check what the listing says about test conditions such as inlet pressure. A home with low pressure may need a booster to get the listed result.

Health decisions

Questions about fluoride for children or dental care belong with your dentist or pediatrician, particularly now that it is no longer added to WASD water. We do not give health advice either way.

The WASD report is the place to confirm current levels each year; if policy changes again, the report will show it. West Miami posts that report on its Water Information page.
