Identify the residue
| What you see | Likely cause |
|---|---|
| White crust that dissolves in vinegar | Calcium hardness |
| Faint spots on glass | Dissolved solids |
| Cloudy glass that will not clean | Detergent etching |
| Orange marks | Iron, usually irrigation wells |
Quick check: wipe a spot with white vinegar. If it dissolves, it is mineral scale. If not, it may be etching or soap film, which a softener will not fix.
What lime softening leaves
At the Orr plant, lime settles out much of the calcium before filtration, and WASD adds a phosphorus compound for corrosion control. The water reaching West Miami is softer than raw groundwater but still carries minerals. Whether they bother you depends on your reading and your tolerance for spots.
West Miami's own report does not include hardness, and WASD's report describes the softening process without a figure for your street. So the reading at your tap is the only number that answers the question for your home.
Three ways to deal with it
- Ion-exchange softener: removes remaining hardness house-wide.
- Salt-free conditioner: does not remove hardness minerals; spots can still form.
- Under-sink RO: spot-free drinking water, coffee makers and glass rinsing without treating the whole house.
See salt-free conditioner vs. ion-exchange softener.
Many households find that an RO at the kitchen sink solves the spots they care most about, on glassware and in coffee makers, without treating every tap. A house-wide softener makes more sense when scale shows up throughout the home and in the water heater.
Where scale shows up
- Tank and tankless water heaters.
- Shower heads and aerators.
- Coffee makers and kettles.
- Glass shower doors.
- Pool waterline tile.
Tankless water heater manufacturers often publish a maximum hardness and recommend periodic descaling. Compare that specification with your tap reading.
Restaurants, cafes and salons along SW 8 Street and Coral Way feel scale first in ice machines, espresso machines and water heaters. Living Water installs commercial softening plants sized to daily use, after the same free test.
Easy wins
- Squeegee glass after each shower.
- Use a rinse aid in the dishwasher.
- Soak aerators in vinegar.
If spots return within days of cleaning, the water is the cause, and testing tells you whether softening is worth it.
