Hardness first
A softener sized for raw, unsoftened groundwater will be oversized for lime-softened WASD water. Ask what hardness reading any quote assumes, and compare it with Jorge's measurement at your tap.
This is the main way West Miami differs from places on unsoftened wells. A quote prepared for raw groundwater will usually be oversized here. Test first, then size, and you avoid paying for capacity you will never use.
Cost drivers
| Driver | Effect |
|---|---|
| Measured hardness | Resin capacity, regeneration frequency |
| People and bathrooms | Daily gallons, peak flow |
| Drain access | Simpler near a laundry standpipe |
| Added carbon | For chloramine, if wanted |
| Commercial use | Restaurants and salons need larger capacity |
If you want chloramine reduction too, a carbon stage can be paired with the softener. Some installers put carbon first to protect the resin; the quote should list both stages and explain the order.
Ongoing costs
- Salt, set by hardness and use.
- Regeneration water and a little electricity.
- Occasional valve service.
A demand-based valve that regenerates by actual use generally wastes less salt than a fixed timer.
Ask for a written estimate of monthly salt use at your hardness and household size.
Resin can last many years on lime-softened city water, especially with carbon ahead of it, but ask what conditions would shorten its life and what replacement involves.
Discharge
The regeneration rinse must go to a proper household drain with an air gap, never a storm drain; West Miami's stormwater is pumped to the C-3 and C-4 canals. If your property uses septic, plan the discharge with your installer and follow local rules.
Homes on sewer are the simpler case: the rinse goes to a laundry standpipe or floor drain with an air gap. Ask where your installer plans to connect before work starts.
Questions for any quote
- What hardness is it sized for?
- How often will it regenerate, and how much salt will it use?
- Where will it drain?
- What warranty covers tanks, valve and labor?
Living Water offers financing through its financing partners; you apply with a credit application, and a co-applicant can apply with you. See softener cost in Florida.
For businesses, the quote should also state the daily gallons it is designed for and which lines are softened.
