What PFAS are
Per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances have been used in nonstick, stain- and water-resistant products and some firefighting foams. They persist in the environment. PFOA and PFOS are the best known. EPA's PFAS pages explain the federal rule and timeline.
Where West Miami's data lives
- WASD's 2025 report: a separate "Additional Contaminants Monitoring" table lists PFOS, PFOA, PFNA, PFHxS and a Hazard Index for the main system, with a note that initial compliance monitoring is underway.
- West Miami's Water Information page: links the city's report and WASD's report.
- EPA UCMR 5: results by water system for 29 PFAS.
Read the numbers in the source table, with footnotes and years. Living Water does not turn them into a safety verdict.
The federal rule sets limits for PFOA, PFOS, PFNA, PFHxS and HFPO-DA, plus a Hazard Index for mixtures, and gives utilities time to monitor and comply. Check EPA's PFAS drinking water pages for the current schedule, since federal dates can change.
Reading the table
- Units are parts per trillion.
- The reported level comes first, with the range in parentheses.
- Compliance is judged on running averages under the rule's schedule.
For questions, WASD lists 786-552-4181 for the Orr plant.
Note the year and the system each result applies to. WASD's table covers the main system; West Miami's pipes carry that same water.
Choosing a filter
- NSF/ANSI 53 (filters) or NSF/ANSI 58 (RO) certification naming PFOA and PFOS.
- The exact model number on the listing.
- On-time cartridge and membrane changes.
Living Water does not claim its systems remove PFAS. Jorge will tell you to verify any model's certification, including anything he shows you.
Whole-home carbon systems are generally sold for chlorine and chloramine. Unless a specific model's listing names PFOA and PFOS reduction, do not assume it covers PFAS.
Testing
PFAS testing needs a certified lab. Jorge's free screening covers chloramine, hardness, TDS, pH and iron, not PFAS. See home screening vs. lab analysis.
If you decide on a lab test, ask the lab which EPA method it uses, how to collect the sample without contaminating it, and what reporting limits apply. Jorge can help you compare the result with WASD's published table.
