Spots are not always hardness
Any dissolved mineral can leave a spot when a droplet evaporates. The city's 2025 report lists, from January 2025 sampling, total dissolved solids of 243 ppm, chloride of 39.5 ppm and sulfate of 36.6 ppm, all below their secondary standards. Some of what you wipe off the shower door is simply that. Hardness, the calcium and magnesium a softener removes, is only part of it, and the city reduces it at the plant.
Reading the clues
| What you see | Likely meaning |
|---|---|
| Spots that wipe off easily | General mineral residue from drying |
| Crust that builds on aerators and shower heads | Hardness scale over time |
| Scale in kettle within weeks | Higher hardness than expected; worth testing |
| Spots or orange marks near sprinklers | Irrigation water, often a well |
Orange marks have their own page: rust stains in West Palm Beach.
Softener or conditioner
- Ion-exchange softener: removes calcium and magnesium; needs salt and a drain. Living Water installs these for homes and businesses.
- Salt-free conditioner: designed to reduce scale formation without removing minerals, so glass may still spot.
Neither removes the other dissolved solids that leave spots. Comparison: salt-free conditioner vs. ion-exchange softener.
What actually reduces spots
- A squeegee on shower glass after each use.
- Vinegar soaks for aerators and shower heads every few months.
- Rinse aid in the dishwasher.
- For drinking water and coffee makers, RO water lowers dissolved solids, so less is left to deposit.
Cars, windows and outdoor glass
Outdoors, spotting depends on which water hits the surface. Washing a car with city water in the sun leaves mineral spots as it dries quickly; washing in shade and drying right away helps a lot. Windows and pool fences hit by sprinklers are a different case: if your irrigation runs on a well, those spots come from the well water and often carry iron, which a household softener does not touch.
When a softener makes sense
If a test shows real hardness at your tap, if you are on a private well, or if you run a business with dishwashers, ice machines or heaters, a softener can pay off in less scale. For many city-water homes, lime softening at the plant already does most of that work. See water softeners in West Palm Beach.
