What lime softening does
The City of West Palm Beach describes its Water Treatment Plant as a conventional lime softening facility. Lime softening raises the water's pH so hardness minerals settle out, before the water is filtered and disinfected. It reduces hardness at the plant, for the whole city, before the water enters 570-plus miles of mains.
The 2025 Water Quality Report lists total dissolved solids of 243 ppm from January 2025 sampling, below the 500 ppm secondary standard. It does not list hardness, which is why a test at your tap is the best number to work from.
When a softener earns its place
- Businesses. Restaurants, hotels, laundries, gyms and car washes run water through equipment where scale adds up. Living Water installs ion-exchange softening plants for these.
- Private wells. Groundwater has not been lime softened and can be considerably harder. See well water in West Palm Beach.
- County-water homes. If your bill is from Palm Beach County Water Utilities, your water comes from different plants and a different source, so test it on its own terms.
- Preference. Some people want fully softened water for the feel, and that is a fair comfort choice.
What a softener does not do
Ion exchange swaps hardness minerals for sodium. It does not remove chloramine or chlorine, so it does not change the pool smell or the summer chlorine switch. If those bother you, see softener vs. filter in West Palm Beach.
Practical needs
- A drain for regeneration water.
- Room for the resin tank and brine tank.
- Power for the control valve.
- A salt routine, or someone to handle it.

Scale or something else?
Before deciding a softener is the answer, rule out look-alikes. White spots on shower glass can come from any dissolved solids drying, not only hardness. Orange or brown marks on walls and walks usually come from an irrigation well with iron, which a household softener does not touch; see rust stains in West Palm Beach. A chemical smell is the disinfectant. Each has its own fix, and only true hardness scale calls for a softener. More on the visible symptoms: hard water spots in West Palm Beach.
Test first
Jorge measures hardness at your tap and asks how your home or business uses water. If a softener would not make a visible difference, he says so. Call, text or WhatsApp (305) 793-5974.
