Part of your water already went through RO
Hollywood's report says its brackish Floridan Aquifer water is treated with reverse osmosis at the plant, then blended with lime-softened, membrane-filtered Biscayne water. So why RO at home? Because chloramine is added after treatment for the trip through the pipes, and your home's plumbing adds its own story. A kitchen RO polishes the water at the last step, right where you drink it.
How the stages work
- Sediment catches particles from mains and home plumbing.
- Carbon reduces chloramine, protecting the membrane.
- RO membrane reduces dissolved solids.
- Alkaline remineralization adds minerals back for taste.
- Final polish before your faucet.
See the compact alkaline RO.
Kitchen fit
- Cabinet space for the unit and, on tank models, the storage tank.
- A drain connection under the sink.
- A spot on the counter or sink deck for the faucet.
- An optional line to the refrigerator or ice maker.
Jorge also checks the shutoff valve under the sink, since an old valve that will not close fully should be replaced before any install.
Renters
If you rent, ask your landlord before any plumbing work. An under-sink system is a small install, but it is still a change. If it is not allowed, a pitcher whose exact cartridge lists chloramine reduction is the fallback.
Alkaline or standard
Standard RO water tastes flat to some people because minerals are removed. The alkaline stage adds some back. Compare on alkaline vs. standard RO.
Water pressure and production
RO membranes need pressure to work well. If your kitchen pressure is low, an RO fills its tank more slowly and sends more water to drain. Jorge checks pressure at the sink, and if it is low he explains whether a pump or a different model makes sense. Tankless designs have their own pressure needs; compare in tankless vs. tank RO.
