What we can and cannot say
Skin dryness has many causes: hot water, long showers, soaps, air conditioning, sun and individual skin conditions. We do not make medical claims. What we can do is measure what is in your water and explain what equipment changes, so you can decide whether it is worth trying.
Chloramine as a comfort factor
The city's 2025 Water Quality Report lists chloramines from 0.6 to 2.9 ppm, within standards. In a hot, steamy shower the smell is more noticeable. A whole-home system rated for chloramine removes it at every tap, including showers. A shower-head filter is a smaller step, but check that its listing covers chloramine, not just chlorine.
It also helps to notice when the dryness happens. If it is worse during weeks when the water smells strongly of chlorine, that may line up with one of Fort Lauderdale's periodic free chlorine periods. If it is the same all year and in every place you shower, the water is less likely to be the main factor.
Hardness is less likely here
Fort Lauderdale lime-softened the water during 2025 and its new Prospect Lake plant uses nanofiltration and ion exchange. Soap residue from hard water is a common complaint in some places, but on Wilton Manors city water it is less likely. A hardness test at your tap rules it in or out.
Habits that matter as much as the water
- Shorter, cooler showers.
- Gentle, fragrance-free cleansers.
- Moisturizing right after drying off.
- A dermatologist for persistent itching, rash or eczema.
Shower filter or whole-home system?
A shower-head filter is inexpensive and easy to install, but small cartridges have little contact time, and chloramine needs contact time. If you try one, choose a model whose listing mentions chloramine and replace it on schedule. A whole-home system handles every shower and sink, which matters in a house with several bathrooms or guests. In a condo, the shower filter is often the practical choice. Jorge can measure chloramine before and after any filter you already own, so you can see whether it is doing anything. For many people, the most noticeable change is simply the absence of a chemical smell in a hot shower, which is easy to judge for yourself.
What a test shows
Jorge measures chloramine, hardness, pH and TDS at your shower or the nearest tap and explains them plainly. If the numbers do not point to the water, he will say so. Call, text or WhatsApp Jorge at (305) 793-5974.
