Where scale shows up
- Shower doors, mirrors and dark fixtures.
- Showerheads and faucet aerators that slow to a dribble.
- Kettles, coffee makers, ice makers and dishwashers.
- Water heaters, especially tankless models.
- Cars and windows washed with a hose.
What we know about Belle Glade's water
PBCWUD's report says the Western Region draws from the Floridan Aquifer, 1,000 to 1,200 feet down, and treats it at its western plant. It lists sodium at 61.9 ppm and a pH target of 7.8 to 8.5. It does not list hardness. Spots can come from hardness and from other dissolved solids, which is another reason to test rather than assume.
Scale also costs efficiency. A layer of scale on a heating element or in a tankless heat exchanger makes it work harder. Descaling on the manufacturer's schedule helps whether or not you treat the water.
Softener vs. conditioner
| Ion-exchange softener | Salt-free conditioner | |
|---|---|---|
| Removes hardness | Yes | No |
| Reduces spotting on glass | Generally yes | Less so |
| Protects heaters from scale | Yes | Can reduce buildup |
| Needs salt and drain | Yes | No |
More: salt-free conditioner vs. ion exchange.
Because sodium and other dissolved solids also leave residue, some households find RO water useful for the final rinse of glassware or for steam irons and humidifiers, even after softening.
Cleaning existing scale
Treatment prevents new scale; it does not remove old buildup. Use a descaler suited to the surface and test stone and coated glass first. Soak aerators and showerheads. Follow appliance makers' descaling instructions.
For businesses, scale protection is often the real reason to soften: commercial dishwashers, ice machines, coffee equipment and laundry machines all suffer. Living Water installs ion-exchange softening plants for businesses after testing.
Spots that are not hardness
Rusty spots point to iron, often from a private or irrigation well; see orange stains in Belle Glade. Spots only on cars and windows near sprinklers are likely irrigation water.
Squeegeeing shower glass after each use is a low-cost habit that cuts spotting a lot, whatever your water.
