What sets the size
- Measured hardness: harder water needs more resin capacity or more frequent regeneration.
- Water use: people, bathrooms and appliances, or for businesses, daily volume.
- Valve: demand-based (metered) regeneration is more efficient than a simple timer.
- Other minerals: iron, if present, affects resin and may need a separate stage.
A softener that is too small regenerates constantly and wastes salt; one that is too large costs more up front and can let resin sit unused. Sizing from a measured hardness and real household use avoids both.
Installation factors
Where the main line enters, available space, a drain for regeneration water, power for the valve, and a bypass for irrigation lines all affect labor. In a garage or utility room near the main, installs are usually simplest.
Outdoor installs need protection from sun and weather, and a brine tank needs room for salt to be added easily. Think about who will refill it and how far they will carry the bags.
Businesses
Restaurants, laundries, hotels, schools, car washes, gyms and offices in Belle Glade can protect equipment like dishwashers, ice machines and boilers with an ion-exchange softening plant. Commercial sizing starts with the volume through each line. Living Water installs softening plants for businesses after testing.
Some businesses run several smaller units in parallel so one can regenerate while another stays in service; others size one larger unit. The test and the daily schedule decide.
Ownership costs
- Salt, in amounts driven by hardness and use.
- Occasional resin cleaning or service.
- Retesting to confirm the settings.
Ask for the expected regeneration frequency based on your test. See water softener cost in Florida.
Sodium and alternatives
PBCWUD's western data lists sodium at 61.9 ppm. A softener adds some sodium in exchange for hardness; potassium chloride is an alternative regenerant. A salt-free conditioner reduces scale without removing minerals. Compare salt-free vs. ion exchange.
A softener is also not a filter: it does nothing for the chlorine taste in PBCWUD water. If both scale and taste bother you, the quote will include two functions, and you can decide whether to do both now or one at a time.
