Signs that point to hard water
- White crust on showerheads, faucet aerators and glass doors.
- Spots on dishes and glasses after the dishwasher.
- Soap that is hard to rinse off.
- Scale in kettles, coffee makers and water heaters.
These signs can also come from other dissolved solids, which is why a measured hardness number beats a guess. More in hard water spots in Belle Glade.
Also look at the hot side. Water heaters concentrate scale, and a heater that rumbles or pops when heating may have sediment and scale built up at the bottom. Tankless units often show scale as error codes or reduced flow. These signs are worth mentioning during the test.
How an ion-exchange softener works
Water flows through a tank of resin beads that trade sodium (or potassium) for calcium and magnesium. When the resin is loaded, the softener regenerates with brine from a salt tank and sends the rinse to a drain. A demand-based valve regenerates only when your actual water use calls for it, which saves salt and water.
A note on sodium
PBCWUD's western data lists sodium at 61.9 ppm, sampled in 2023. A softener adds a little more sodium in exchange for the hardness it removes. If you are on a sodium-restricted diet, ask your doctor, and consider potassium chloride in the brine tank or using RO water for drinking.
Businesses in Belle Glade
Living Water installs ion-exchange softening plants for businesses too: restaurants, hotels, schools, laundries, car washes, offices and gyms. Scale in commercial dishwashers, ice machines, boilers and washers is costly. A test at the point of use and the volume of water you go through set the size.
For a business, the useful first question is which lines need soft water. Kitchens, laundries and boiler feeds usually do; toilets and irrigation usually don't. Softening only what needs it keeps salt and service lower.
Softener, conditioner or filter?
A softener removes hardness. A salt-free conditioner reduces scale sticking without removing minerals. A carbon filter handles chlorine taste and odor, which is a separate issue. Compare in softener vs. filter and salt-free conditioner vs. ion exchange.
