Stage by stage
- Sediment: catches particles, useful after hydrant flushing during chlorine maintenance.
- Carbon: reduces chloramine and chlorine, protecting the membrane.
- RO membrane: reduces dissolved solids, including sodium and fluoride.
- Post-filter and alkaline stage: polish taste and add minerals to raise pH.
RO and PFAS: check the listing
Boynton Beach's 2025 report includes unregulated monitoring results for several PFAS compounds. Some RO systems are certified under NSF/ANSI 58 for PFOA and PFOS reduction; many are not. If PFAS is part of your reason for buying, confirm the exact model's listing names PFOA and PFOS. Living Water does not claim PFAS reduction for its systems. See PFAS in Boynton Beach.
Fit for Boynton homes
- 55+ and condo communities: under-sink RO usually avoids building-level plumbing; check community rules.
- Single-family homes: often paired with a whole-home system.
- Ice makers: most RO systems can feed the refrigerator line, which many households like for ice taste.
Why the carbon stage matters so much here
RO membranes do not tolerate chlorine-type disinfectants well. In Boynton Beach the carbon prefilter faces chloramine for most of the year and stronger free chlorine during maintenance weeks. If that prefilter runs past its life, the membrane can be damaged without any obvious sign except slowly rising dissolved solids in the filtered water. Changing the prefilter on time is the cheapest insurance for the most expensive part of the system. Jorge records the TDS reading on installation day so you have a baseline to check against later with a simple handheld meter.
Alkaline vs. standard
RO water can taste flat. An alkaline stage adds minerals back for taste and pH. It is a preference, not a health claim. Compare alkaline vs. standard RO and tankless vs. tank RO.
Upkeep
- Prefilters and post-filters on a schedule set by your use.
- Membrane replacement less often, if prefilters are changed on time.
- Some water goes to the drain while filtered water is made; ask for the model's ratio.
- A handheld TDS reading shows when performance drops.
- If you leave for the summer, drain the tank once when you return and run the faucet for a few minutes before drinking.
