Options compared
| Option | Good for | Watch for |
|---|---|---|
| Pitcher | Renters, small households | Often certified for chlorine, not chloramine |
| Fridge filter | Convenience | Certifications vary by model |
| Under-sink alkaline RO | Chloramine plus dissolved solids at one faucet | Space, drain water, filter schedule |
| Whole-home chloramine system | Every tap and shower | Does not reduce dissolved solids |
What Boynton's water brings to the choice
The 2025 report lists a combined chlorine and chloramine running average of 2.84 ppm, sodium at 43.2 ppm, fluoride averaging 0.12 ppm, and PFAS monitoring results including PFOS at 26.5 ppt and PFOA at 8.8 ppt. The city says its water meets all current standards and is upgrading its plants ahead of federal PFAS requirements. If PFAS matters to you, the certification listing is the deciding factor, not a brochure. See PFAS in Boynton Beach.
By type of home
- Condo, villa or 55+ community home: under-sink RO, within community rules.
- Single-family home: many pair whole-home filtration with RO in the kitchen.
- Small office: RO sized to daily use.
Alkaline or standard RO
An alkaline stage adds minerals after the membrane for taste and pH. It is a preference, not a health claim. See alkaline vs. standard RO.
Coffee, ice and cooking
Drinking water includes coffee, tea, ice and cooking water. Disinfectant can affect coffee and tea taste, and dissolved minerals scale kettles and espresso machines. An RO line to the refrigerator covers ice. If you already have a fridge filter, ask whether to keep it once RO feeds the fridge; it can often be bypassed, saving cartridges.
Questions before you buy
- Is this model certified for chloramine, not only chlorine?
- Does its NSF/ANSI 58 listing name the contaminants I care about?
- What is the filter schedule, and can it feed my ice maker?
- What does my tap test show, and what will the system change?
- Who services it, and what does a service visit include?
Write the answers down for each option you are considering; side by side, the right choice is usually obvious.
