Why the switch matters for equipment
Chloramine is chlorine bonded to ammonia, and it reacts slowly with ordinary carbon. Free chlorine reacts quickly. A small filter designed only for chlorine may seem fine during maintenance weeks and then let chloramine through the rest of the year. A system sized for chloramine covers both. The city notes that some residents notice a stronger taste or smell during free-chlorine maintenance, which a whole-home system also smooths out.
What changes at home
- Less chemical smell in hot showers and in the laundry room.
- Better-tasting water at every faucet and the fridge line.
- Water treated before the water heater.
It does not lower dissolved solids such as the sodium the city lists at 43.2 ppm. For drinking water, many owners add under-sink RO.
Do you also need a softener?
Often not on city water. The East plant lime-softens and uses MIEX to remove much of the mineral content, and the West plant uses nanofiltration membranes. Which plant's water reaches you, and in what blend, can vary by season. A hardness test at your tap is the honest way to decide. See softener vs. filter in Boynton Beach.
Installation notes
- Location: at the main line before the water heater; often a garage or an exterior wall.
- Bypass valve: for service without shutting off the house, so a filter change never leaves you without water.
- Irrigation: keeping sprinklers outside the filter saves media.
- HOAs and 55+ communities: exterior equipment and plumbing work may need approval.
During chlorine maintenance
The city flushes hydrants during maintenance periods to make sure all areas of the system are thoroughly disinfected, and flushing can stir up sediment in the mains. A sediment prefilter ahead of the carbon protects the media. Ask whether the quoted system includes one, and how often it is changed. If your water looks cloudy or tinted right after flushing nearby, running a cold tap for a few minutes usually clears it before it reaches the filter.
