Why the city uses chloramine
The city's Chlorine Maintenance FAQ explains that chloramine provides longer-lasting disinfection as water travels to taps and has fewer taste and odor issues than free chlorine. Periodic free-chlorine maintenance keeps the distribution pipes clean, and the city notes other South Florida utilities do the same. The city treats with liquid sodium hypochlorite and monitors levels continuously.
Why plain carbon may struggle
Chloramine reacts slowly with ordinary activated carbon, so a small filter can improve taste while letting much of it through at household flow. Catalytic carbon and larger media beds with more contact time handle chloramine better. Because Boynton also uses free chlorine part of the year, the right system needs to cover both, which a chloramine-rated system does.
Certification to check
- NSF/ANSI 42 includes chloramine reduction; confirm the listing says chloramine, not just chlorine.
- Check rated flow and capacity on the exact model's listing.
- For RO, the carbon prefilter must be suited to chloramine to protect the membrane.
- Ask how the system performs during free-chlorine maintenance weeks, when the disinfectant is stronger-smelling.
What the city itself suggests
For taste during maintenance weeks, the city suggests leaving an open container of drinking water in the refrigerator for a few hours. For aquariums, it suggests granular activated carbon filtration or a dechlorinating conditioner that handles both ammonia and chlorine. For health concerns, it recommends consulting your healthcare provider and notes that filters that remove chlorine and chloramine can be used for drinking and cooking water. Dialysis patients should follow their care team's guidance.
Options for a Boynton home
- Whole-home chloramine system: every tap and shower. Living Water describes its Puronics Clarius iGen and Goodspring systems as removing chlorine and chloramine.
- Under-sink RO: drinking and cooking water.
- Both, for the most complete result.

Measure yours
With results from 0.02 to 5.2 ppm across the system, the citywide average does not tell you your number. Homes near the end of a long line, or condos where water sits overnight in building pipes, can read differently from a house near a main. Jorge measures the disinfectant at your tap and notes whether a maintenance period is underway. Call, text or WhatsApp (305) 793-5974 for a free test.
