Why the County uses chloramine
Broward County's report explains that a small residual of chloramine is maintained throughout the distribution system to control microbial regrowth. In Coconut Creek, that water travels from the County plant in Pompano Beach through the city's storage tanks, booster stations and about 286 miles of pipe. A long-lasting disinfectant suits that kind of trip, and it is also why the taste and smell persist to your tap.
The city's 2025 report lists chloramine results from 1.77 to 4.26 ppm across monthly sampling, with no violation. Readings vary with distance from storage and how long water sits in pipes, which is why your own tap reading is more useful than a citywide figure.
Chlorine vs. chloramine
| Free chlorine | Chloramine | |
|---|---|---|
| Stability | Fades faster | Lasts longer in pipes |
| Smell | Strong, pool-like | Milder, persistent |
| Carbon filters | Removed quickly | Needs more contact time or catalytic carbon |
What to look for
- A listing under NSF/ANSI 42 that names chloramine reduction, not only chlorine.
- The exact model number on the certifier's listing.
- A flow rate and capacity that fit your household; claims only hold within them.
Catalytic carbon is a common media choice for chloramine because it is treated to react faster. Whatever the media, ask how the system was sized for your flow and how often it is serviced.
Options
- Whole-home: a city water system at the main line. Living Water describes its Puronics Clarius iGen and Goodspring systems as removing chloramine and chlorine.
- Kitchen: an under-sink RO with chloramine-rated carbon pre-filters.
- Both: common in single-family homes.
See chloramine in city water: choosing a filter.
Many households start with an under-sink RO and add a whole-home system later if the shower smell still bothers them. A good plan allows for that without replacing what you already have.
Aquariums and medical equipment
Fish keepers need a conditioner that neutralizes chloramine, not just chlorine. People using home dialysis should follow their care team's guidance. A household filter is not a substitute for medical-grade water treatment.
If you keep a pond or water plants from the hose, the same applies: chloramine needs to be neutralized for fish.
Measure it
Jorge measures total chlorine at your tap before recommending anything, and after installation so you can see the difference. Call, text or WhatsApp (305) 793-5974.
He also asks when the smell bothers you most. Constant smell is the normal chloramine residual. A sudden change is worth reporting to Utilities and Engineering at 954-973-6786.
