Hardness sets the size
Coral Gables water comes from the Miami-Dade Water and Sewer Department (WASD). Its Alexander Orr, Jr. plant lime-treats water to reduce hardness before it reaches most of the city. The hardness that remains at your tap, combined with daily water use, determines how much softening capacity you need. More capacity means a larger resin tank and a higher equipment cost, but fewer regenerations.
Home and installation factors
| Factor | Effect on cost |
|---|---|
| People and bathrooms | Higher demand means a larger unit and valve. |
| Install location | Garage or utility room near the main line is simpler; long pipe runs add labor. |
| Bypass and plumbing | Older plumbing may need new fittings or a bypass valve. |
| Drain access | A softener needs a drain for regeneration; distance and route matter. |
| Septic vs. sewer | The city reports about half of properties are on septic; planning where discharge goes is part of the job. |
| Combined system | Pairing with a chloramine filter adds equipment but may be quoted together. |
Homes vs. businesses
Restaurants, gyms, hotels and offices in Coral Gables' business districts have heavier water use than homes, so commercial softening plants are sized differently. Living Water installs ion-exchange softening for both.
Ownership costs
- Salt or potassium for regeneration
- Water used during regeneration
- Service: resin and valve checks over time
Ask any installer how often the unit will regenerate based on your measured hardness. See water softener cost in Florida and salt-free conditioner vs. ion-exchange.
When a softener is not worth it
If your tap hardness is low enough that spots wipe off easily and fixtures stay clear, a softener may not pay its way. Some Gables households mostly dislike the chloramine smell, and for them a whole-home filter alone is the better use of budget. Others want both. Jorge shows you the hardness reading and explains which problem you actually have, so you are not paying to solve the wrong one. See softener vs. filter.
What a fair quote includes
- Hardness reading the sizing is based on
- Exact model and capacity
- Installation, bypass and drain work
- Startup salt and programming
- Warranty terms
