Two different jobs
| Water softener | Whole-home filter | |
|---|---|---|
| Main target | Calcium and magnesium (hardness) | Chlorine and chloramine, taste and odor |
| What you notice | Fewer spots, less scale, better lather | Less pool smell, better-tasting tap water |
| How it works | Ion exchange with salt regeneration | Carbon-based media |
| Needs a drain | Yes, for regeneration | Depends on the system |
What Coral Gables water brings
Coral Gables is supplied by the Miami-Dade Water and Sewer Department (WASD). Most of the city lies south of SW 8 Street, the area WASD's Alexander Orr, Jr. plant generally serves. WASD's 2025 report says Orr lime-treats water to reduce hardness, then disinfects and filters it, and the system uses chloramine as its disinfectant.
So the chloramine part is a given for every Gables home on city water. The hardness part varies, and it is the question a test answers.
Quick self-check
- Bothered by smell or taste? That points to a filter.
- Scrubbing white spots off shower glass every few days? That points to hardness and a possible softener.
- Both? A combined setup, filter plus softener, is common.
- Only drinking water bothers you? An under-sink RO system may be all you need.
Gables-specific considerations
Septic. The City of Coral Gables reports about half of its properties are on septic. A softener discharges regeneration water, so plan the drain route before choosing. Older homes. Many Gables houses are decades old, and space near the main line may be tight. A filter-only setup has a smaller footprint than filter plus softener. Irrigation wells. Neither a softener on the house line nor a whole-home filter treats the separate irrigation well that may be staining your walls; that is a different fix.
What about salt-free conditioners?
Salt-free conditioners do not remove hardness minerals the way ion exchange does; they aim to change how scale forms. Results vary with water chemistry and expectations. Read salt-free conditioner vs. ion-exchange softener and the general softener vs. filter comparison.
Cost and upkeep differ too
The two systems also age differently. A softener uses salt or potassium and a little water every time it regenerates, and its resin lasts for years with basic care. A carbon filter has media that is replaced or serviced on a schedule tied to how much water passes through it. If you are weighing one against the other, ask for the ownership routine of each in writing. Our Coral Gables pages on softener cost and filtration cost explain what drives each.
