Hardness in Coral Gables tap water
Coral Gables gets its water from the Miami-Dade Water and Sewer Department (WASD), drawn from the limestone Biscayne Aquifer. Groundwater moving through limestone picks up calcium and magnesium, the minerals that make water hard. WASD's 2025 Water Quality Report says the Orr plant uses lime treatment to reduce hardness before disinfecting and filtering.
Reduced does not mean zero. What reaches your faucet can still leave white film on shower doors or crust on aerators, especially where water sits and evaporates. Your water heater, kettle and dishwasher see the same minerals.
Signs a softener may help
- White spots that come back right after you clean glass doors
- Crust on faucet aerators and showerheads
- Soap and shampoo that do not lather well
- Scale inside kettles or coffee makers
These are clues, not proof. A hardness reading tells you whether the problem is minerals or something else, such as residue from cleaning products. See hard water spots in Coral Gables.
How an ion-exchange softener works
Living Water installs ion-exchange softening plants. Water passes through resin that swaps calcium and magnesium for sodium or potassium. When the resin is loaded, the unit regenerates with a salt brine and flushes it to a drain. The result is water that does not leave hard scale. A softener does not remove chloramine; that is the job of a filter.
A Coral Gables detail: septic and discharge
The City of Coral Gables reports that about half of its properties are on septic systems rather than central sewer. Because a softener sends regeneration water to a drain, it is worth knowing where your drain goes before installation. Jorge asks about this during the visit and plans the setup around your home. If you are unsure whether you are on septic, check your property records or the city's septic-to-sewer information.
Softener, filter, or both
Many Gables homeowners actually want two things: less chloramine smell and less scale. A filter handles the first, a softener the second. Read softener vs. filter, or compare salt-free conditioners and ion-exchange softeners.
