Start with what the water needs
Coral Gables water comes from the Miami-Dade Water and Sewer Department (WASD). It is chloramine-disinfected and, for most of the city, lime-treated at the Alexander Orr plant to reduce hardness. Because the source water is the same across the city, the biggest cost differences come from your goals and your house, not the utility. A home that only wants better drinking water needs far less than a home that wants chloramine-free showers plus softened water.
Main cost drivers
| Driver | Why it matters |
|---|---|
| System type | Under-sink RO, whole-home filtration and softening are different equipment with different footprints. |
| Household size and bathrooms | More simultaneous flow means larger equipment. |
| Main line access | Older Gables homes may have tight or landscaped entry points that take more labor. |
| Plumbing condition | Older pipes may need extra fittings or repair at the tie-in. |
| Drain and discharge | About half of Coral Gables properties are on septic, per the city, which can affect where softener discharge goes. |
| Combination systems | Filter plus softener plus RO costs more than one, but may be quoted as a package. |
Older homes and historic properties
Coral Gables is known for its 1920s Mediterranean Revival architecture and has a long-running historic preservation program. Most water treatment equipment is installed inside or beside the home's utility area, but if your property is historically designated or in an association, ask about any exterior work rules before the job is scheduled. That planning time can show up in a quote.
What an itemized quote should list
- Exact equipment model for each system
- Installation labor and materials
- Any plumbing modifications
- Permit handling, if required
- First-year maintenance and filter schedule
- Warranty terms in writing

Ownership costs to ask about
Ask how often filters or media are replaced, how much salt a softener uses, and what service visits include. Read the annual cost of owning a whole-home filter.
