The system
- Number of stages and whether an alkaline remineralization stage is included
- Tank vs. tankless: tankless units save cabinet space; see tankless vs. tank RO
- Faucet style and finish
- Certifications: models certified under NSF/ANSI 58 for specific contaminants are documented to that standard
Installation in a Gables kitchen
Coral Gables has many renovated kitchens inside older homes, and those details drive labor:
- Countertop: granite, quartz or marble may need a precise hole for the RO faucet, unless an existing sprayer or soap hole can be used.
- Cabinet space: a garbage disposal or deep sink can limit room for a tank.
- Supply valve: older shutoff valves may need replacing before tying in.
- Drain connection: RO needs a drain saddle or adapter.
- Extra connections: running a line to a refrigerator or ice maker adds parts and time.
Ongoing costs to ask about
RO costs continue after installation. Ask:
- How often each filter stage and the membrane are replaced, given your water
- Whether replacement parts are standard or proprietary
- How much water the system sends to drain per gallon produced, which shows up on your WASD bill
- What a service visit includes
See RO filter replacement cost and bottled water vs. RO.
Why the water test matters for cost
Your water's hardness and dissolved solids affect how hard the membrane works and how long filters last. WASD's Alexander Orr plant lime-treats water to reduce hardness, but your tap reading is what counts. A test before the quote means the filter schedule fits your water.
Quote checklist before you sign
Compare RO quotes on the same terms. Each should name the exact model and number of stages, say whether the alkaline stage and faucet are included, list any countertop, valve or drain work, include the first set of replacement filters if offered, and spell out warranty coverage for the membrane and housings. If one quote leaves out the installation details, ask before comparing totals. Our guide on how to compare water treatment quotes has a full checklist.
