What changed in 2025
WASD's 2025 Water Quality Report says the Alexander Orr, Jr., John E. Preston and Hialeah plants discontinued adding fluoride as of June 6, 2025, to comply with County Resolution R-370-25, approved May 6, 2025, and Florida Senate Bill 700, which took effect July 1, 2025. WASD says the change does not significantly affect treatment or compliance with water quality standards.
What is in the water now
In the period after fluoridation stopped, WASD reports main-system fluoride of about 0.1 to 0.3 ppm, from naturally occurring levels in the soil and the Biscayne Aquifer. The report's table shows the 2025 range, which includes readings from before the change. Fluoride is regulated with a maximum contaminant level of 4 ppm.
Living Water does not take a position on fluoride. This page is about what is in the water and how filtration works, not health advice. Questions about fluoride and dental care belong with your dentist or doctor.
How fluoride is reduced at home
- Reverse osmosis is a common method for drinking water. Look for an NSF/ANSI 58 listing that includes fluoride for the exact model.
- Standard carbon filters, including most pitchers and fridge filters, are generally not designed for fluoride.
- Whole-home fluoride reduction is uncommon; most people treat only drinking and cooking water.

Private wells
A Cutler Bay home on a private well gets whatever fluoride is naturally in its groundwater. A certified lab test tells you the number. See well water in Cutler Bay.
Why some households still ask about fluoride
Even with fluoridation stopped, people ask for two reasons: they want to know what remains from natural sources, or they want one system that handles taste, dissolved solids and fluoride at the drinking tap. An RO with the right certification can cover all three at one faucet. If fluoride is not a concern for you, nothing on this page requires action.
Questions to ask before you buy
- Is the exact model certified for fluoride reduction, and to what standard?
- What is the filter and membrane schedule?
- What else does the system change, such as dissolved minerals and pH?
