What PFAS are
PFAS (per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances) have been used in non-stick, stain-resistant and water-resistant products and in some firefighting foams. They break down very slowly, which is why they show up in water supplies around the country. EPA's PFAS pages explain the national drinking water standards and their timelines.
Where to find Cutler Bay's PFAS data
Cutler Bay is on WASD's main system, fed in this area by the Alexander Orr, Jr. plant. WASD's 2025 Water Quality Report has an "additional contaminants monitoring" table listing PFOS, PFOA, PFNA, PFHxS and a Hazard Index for a PFAS mixture. The report says initial compliance monitoring is underway, that WASD is taking measures to comply with the new limits on the federal schedule, and that systems will report compliance results in reports beginning in 2027.
Read the table yourself on miamidade.gov and note which system and year each number applies to. EPA also publishes nationwide UCMR 5 data by water system. For questions, WASD's water quality line is 786-552-4181.
Choosing a PFAS filter
- Look for NSF/ANSI 53 (filters) or NSF/ANSI 58 (reverse osmosis) certification that specifically names PFOA and PFOS reduction.
- Match the exact model number on the certifier's listing, not just the brand.
- Replace cartridges on schedule; claims apply only within rated capacity.
Living Water does not claim its systems remove PFAS. Jorge will tell you to check any model's certification before buying, including anything he shows you.
Testing for PFAS
PFAS testing requires a certified lab using EPA methods. Jorge's free in-home screening covers chlorine and chloramine, hardness, TDS, pH and iron, not PFAS. He can help you read the WASD table and decide what makes sense. See home screening vs. lab analysis.
Private wells
If a Cutler Bay property drinks from a private well, no utility data covers it. A certified lab is the only way to know. See well water in Cutler Bay.
Reading the table without panic or dismissal
PFAS results are reported in parts per trillion, a very small unit. Look at the column for the main system, the range of results, and the federal limit next to it, and remember that compliance under the new rule is calculated over time. If a number is unclear, ask WASD directly. Jorge is happy to sit with you and read it in plain words, without selling you anything for it.
