What PFAS are
Per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances have been used for decades in non-stick, stain-resistant and water-resistant products and some firefighting foams. They break down very slowly. In April 2024 EPA set national drinking water limits for several PFAS, including 4 parts per trillion each for PFOA and PFOS, with future compliance deadlines. EPA's PFAS pages explain the rule.
Where to find Deerfield Beach data
- EPA UCMR 5: EPA's fifth Unregulated Contaminant Monitoring Rule sampled public water systems nationwide for 29 PFAS, and EPA publishes the results in its UCMR 5 data finder, searchable by system.
- The city: ask the Environmental Compliance Superintendent at 954-480-4370, the contact the 2025 report gives for questions.
- Future reports: watch for PFAS results in upcoming Water Quality Reports as EPA's rule phases in.
When you search the data finder, look for the City of Deerfield Beach's public water system. If you're unsure which entry is yours, the city can tell you.
Does the city's RO plant matter?
The city treats part of its supply with reverse osmosis and part with nanofiltration, then blends it with lime-softened water. Membrane processes are among those used for PFAS treatment, but the report doesn't make PFAS claims for the plant, and neither do we. The data, not the process name, is what tells you what's in your water.
Choosing a home filter
- NSF/ANSI 53 (filters) or NSF/ANSI 58 (RO) certification that lists PFOA and PFOS reduction.
- The exact model number on the certifier's listing.
- Replacement on schedule; performance applies within rated capacity.
Living Water does not claim its systems remove PFAS. Verify any model's certification, including anything Jorge shows you.
Testing
PFAS testing needs a certified lab using EPA methods. Jorge's free in-home test covers chloramine, hardness, TDS, pH and iron, not PFAS. He'll help you find and read the data. See home screening vs. lab analysis. Private wells aren't covered by any utility data; see well water.
Reading results
UCMR 5 results are reported per compound, in parts per trillion, with a minimum reporting level below which a result shows as not detected. Compare detected values with EPA's current limits. If something is unclear, ask the city or ask Jorge to walk through it.
