Why spots happen on softened water
- Residual hardness: lime softening reduces hardness but does not take it to zero.
- Other dissolved solids: the city lists sodium at 31.8 ppm; salts can leave a light film.
- Old scale: heaters and fixtures can hold deposits from years ago, or from a previous well.
- Sprinkler overspray: windows hit by irrigation from a private well can show mineral and iron spots that have nothing to do with your tap.
Match the spot to the cause
| What you see | Most useful fix |
|---|---|
| Light film on shower glass | Squeegee and ventilation |
| Spots on dishwasher glasses | Rinse aid; check dishwasher settings |
| Crust on shower heads | Descale; test hardness |
| Orange-white spots on outside windows | Re-aim sprinklers; see iron stains |
| Measured high hardness | A softener sized from the number |
Softener or conditioner
An ion-exchange softener removes hardness minerals. A salt-free conditioner changes how they behave so they scale less. If your test shows low hardness, you may need neither. Compare salt-free conditioner vs. ion-exchange softener. Living Water installs ion-exchange softening plants when a measured number supports one.
Restaurants and businesses
For espresso machines, dishwashers, ice machines and boilers, even modest hardness adds up over thousands of cycles. Businesses should use the equipment maker's water specification and a measured hardness to decide. See softeners in Delray Beach.
Water heaters and scale
Tank water heaters collect sediment and scale over time, which can show up as popping or rumbling noises and slower heating. An annual flush, done according to the manufacturer's instructions or by a plumber, removes much of it. If your home was once on a well before connecting to city water, old scale in the heater and pipes may predate the current supply entirely.
Cleaning and prevention
Diluted white vinegar loosens mineral spots on glass and chrome; test first on coated glass and specialty finishes. Soak shower heads and aerators a few times a year. Drying shower glass after use prevents most spots. For natural stone like marble or travertine, avoid acids entirely and use a cleaner made for stone, since vinegar can etch the surface.

Jorge tests hardness and dissolved solids at your tap and tells you plainly if a softener is not worth it. With a new city plant expected by early 2028, a retest after it comes online is a good idea too. Call, text or WhatsApp (305) 793-5974. Related: softener vs. filter, softener cost.
