Lime softening, explained
Lime softening raises the water's pH so calcium and magnesium drop out as solids in large settling tanks. It is a long-established municipal method; neighboring Boynton Beach's East Water Treatment Plant also uses lime softening. Delray's plant uses this process, and the same step also removes color and iron, according to the city. The 2025 report does not publish a hardness figure, so your tap test is the honest number to go by.
Who in Delray still uses softeners
- Restaurants and cafes, downtown and elsewhere, where espresso machines, dishwashers and ice makers are sensitive to scale.
- Gyms, salons and laundries with heavy hot-water use.
- Properties on private wells, where water arrives without the city's treatment.
- Homes where a test shows meaningful hardness at the tap.
How Living Water's softening plants work
Living Water installs ion-exchange softening plants on Puronics equipment for homes and businesses. Resin captures calcium and magnesium and releases sodium or potassium; a brine cycle regenerates the resin. Metered valves regenerate based on actual water use. For a business, the quote should show capacity, daily volume assumptions, regeneration settings and expected salt use.
Sodium on a softened supply
Delray's 2025 report lists sodium at 31.8 ppm in the city's water. A home softener adds a little more, in proportion to the hardness it removes. Potassium chloride can replace salt, and an under-sink RO reduces dissolved solids at the kitchen tap if you want to keep sodium down in drinking water.
Before 2028
The city plans to replace its lime softening plant with a new plant using enhanced treatment, with construction expected to finish by early 2028. The city's published information does not spell out how that will change hardness at the tap. If you are on the fence about a softener for a home, it is reasonable to test now and again after the new plant comes online.
