Why many Delray homes spend nothing here
Lime softening at the city plant does much of the work before water reaches your meter. The 2025 report does not publish a hardness figure, so the honest answer comes from a tap test. If your number is low, Jorge will tell you a softener is not worth buying.
When you need one: what drives the price
- Measured hardness and any iron, which set capacity.
- Water use: household size, or a business's daily volume.
- Valve type: metered regeneration based on actual use.
- Installation: location, drain, power and bypass.
- Other stages on a well, such as iron or sulfur treatment.
Ownership costs, as questions
- How much salt or potassium per month at my use?
- How much water does each regeneration use?
- Expected resin life and service?
- Who programs it, and can I see the settings?

Businesses in Delray
Restaurants, cafes, gyms, salons and laundries often weigh softening to protect espresso machines, dishwashers, ice makers, water heaters and washers. Living Water installs ion-exchange softening plants for businesses; the quote should show capacity, regeneration settings and expected salt use, based on a test and the equipment maker's requirements.
Cheaper fixes for common complaints
If what bothers you is a little white residue on glass or the shower door, try the low-cost steps first: a squeegee after showers, rinse aid in the dishwasher, and descaling the coffee maker. If the complaint is the smell or taste of the water, a softener will not help; that is chloramine, which needs a carbon system built for it. Spending on the wrong equipment is the most expensive mistake, so match the fix to the measured cause. Jorge will tell you plainly if your complaint does not call for a softener.
A note on timing
Delray's new treatment plant, expected by early 2028, will replace the lime softening plant with enhanced treatment. The city has not published how hardness at the tap may change. For a home, it is reasonable to test now and again after the new plant is online before committing to softening.
