Why spots appear even on softened city water
WASD's 2025 report says the Hialeah plant uses lime treatment to reduce hardness, and the John E. Preston plant uses enhanced softening. Both generally serve homes north of SW 8 Street, Doral included. Softening at the plant lowers hardness; it does not remove every dissolved mineral. When a droplet dries on glass, whatever was dissolved in it stays behind. In a Doral bathroom with a frameless glass shower, that adds up.
Spots vs. scale: what each tells you
| You see | Likely meaning |
|---|---|
| Light white spots on glass that wipe off | Normal mineral residue from evaporation |
| Hard white crust on faucets and shower heads | Real hardness at your tap |
| Scale in kettles, coffee makers or the water heater | Hardness concentrated by heat |
| Orange or brown marks | Iron, often from a well; see rust stains in Doral |
Softener vs. conditioner
- Ion-exchange softener: captures calcium and magnesium in resin and swaps them for sodium or potassium. It actually lowers hardness, which reduces spotting and scale. It needs salt, a drain and power, and uses water to regenerate.
- Salt-free conditioner: changes how minerals behave so they are less likely to stick as scale. The minerals stay in the water, so spots on glass usually remain.
For spots specifically, only true softening lowers the mineral content. Full comparison: salt-free conditioner vs. ion-exchange softener.
Where Doral sees the most scale
Doral homes on city water may only see light spotting. The heavier cases tend to be businesses, where hot water runs all day through dishwashers, ice machines, espresso machines and commercial water heaters in restaurants, hotels and gyms, and properties on a private well, whose water skips plant softening. Living Water installs ion-exchange softening plants for both homes and businesses when the test supports it. See water softeners in Doral.
Low-cost habits before you buy
- Squeegee shower glass after each use.
- Dry glassware by hand or use a rinse aid in the dishwasher.
- Soak shower heads in white vinegar to dissolve crust.
