Doral homes: test before you soften
WASD's 2024 Water Quality Report describes how the plants that generally supply Doral reduce hardness. The Hialeah plant uses lime treatment, and the John E. Preston plant uses enhanced softening. That does not mean every tap is the same, but it does mean you should see a hardness result from your own water before paying for a softener.
If your main complaint is the disinfectant smell, a softener will not help; a whole-home filter will.
Doral businesses: where softening earns its keep
Doral is home to a large business district, from restaurants and hotels near the airport to gyms, offices, schools and laundries. Living Water installs ion-exchange softening plants for businesses like these. In commercial use, hardness shows up as:
| Business | Where scale causes trouble |
|---|---|
| Restaurant or cafe | Dishwashers, ice machines, espresso and coffee equipment |
| Hotel | Water heaters, laundry equipment, guest bathrooms |
| Gym | Showers, water heaters, fixtures |
| Laundry or car wash | Washers, heaters, rinse systems |
| Office or school | Water heaters, break room appliances |
Commercial plants are sized to water use, so Jorge tests the water and looks at the equipment first.
How an ion-exchange softener works
Water flows through resin that captures calcium and magnesium and releases sodium or potassium. The softener regenerates with brine from a salt tank, then rinses to a drain. Plan for floor space, a drain and an outlet. In a townhome, that is often the garage; in a business, a back room or utility area near the main line. For alternatives, see salt-free conditioner vs. ion-exchange softener.
Water use and regeneration
Softeners use water each time they regenerate. During the February 2026 water shortage warning for Miami-Dade County, the City of Doral asked residents to conserve voluntarily. If water use matters to your household or business, ask how the softener decides when to regenerate and how it is set up for your actual use.
Private wells near Doral
Homes and properties on a private well skip utility treatment, so hardness is often higher and may come with iron or sulfur odor. Treatment is configured from the well's test. See well water systems and city vs. well water.
