What the county's report says
The 2025 report's eastern data table lists fluoride from May 2023 sampling at up to 0.898 ppm, with a range of 0.738 to 0.898 ppm, against a maximum contaminant level of 4 ppm. A footnote explains that PBCWUD discontinued fluoride as an additive before July 1, 2025, and that the fluoride data is based on triennial sampling done in 2023, when fluoride was still a permitted additive. Fluoride also occurs naturally in groundwater, which future sampling will reflect.
What changed in Florida
The Florida Legislature passed SB 700 in 2025. It prohibits adding to a public water supply any additive that is not for the explicit purpose of improving water quality, and it took effect July 1, 2025. The Senate's bill summary explains the change. We do not take a position on fluoride; this page covers facts and options.
How fluoride is reduced at home
- Reverse osmosis: the most common home method. Look for NSF/ANSI 58 certification listing fluoride reduction for the exact model.
- Activated alumina: used in some dedicated fluoride filters; check certification and replacement schedules.
- Standard carbon filters: generally not designed for fluoride.
See under-sink RO in Greenacres.
Do you still need a fluoride filter?
With fluoride no longer added, many Greenacres households who ask about it are really after better-tasting drinking water without the chloramine taste. An under-sink alkaline RO covers that and lowers dissolved solids generally. If fluoride specifically matters to you, the certification is what to check. For questions about fluoride and health, including children's dental care, talk with your dentist or doctor.
If you choose RO for this reason
Ask whether the exact model's certification lists fluoride reduction, how often the membrane and filters are replaced, and what the alkaline stage adds back. With PBCWUD's chloramine residual, also ask how the carbon pre-filter protects the membrane. Compare in alkaline vs. standard RO.
Private wells and next step
The county's data does not cover private wells; a certified lab test shows a well's natural fluoride level. See well water in Greenacres.
