Why you can still see spots
Spots are what is left when water evaporates. Even softened water carries some dissolved solids; PBCWUD's eastern sodium results, for example, ranged from 18.2 to 49.7 ppm in 2023 sampling. Those can leave faint marks on glass. True hardness scale, the crusty white buildup on aerators and showerheads, is mostly calcium and magnesium, and that is what a softener removes.
Where the spots appear
- Shower glass and dishes: your tap water.
- Outside windows, car, screen enclosure: usually sprinklers, often fed by an irrigation well.
- Hot-side fixtures and the water heater: heating concentrates minerals.
Each points to a different fix, and only one is a softener. A photo of the worst spots helps Jorge connect what you see with what he measures.
Softener vs. salt-free conditioner
| Ion-exchange softener | Salt-free conditioner | |
|---|---|---|
| Removes hardness | Yes | No |
| Uses salt | Yes (or potassium) | No |
| Needs a drain | Yes | Usually no |
| Fits when | Measured hardness is high | You want scale managed without salt |

Simple fixes for spots
- Squeegee shower glass after use.
- Use a rinse aid in the dishwasher.
- Use RO water for coffee makers and kettles; see under-sink RO.
- Clean aerators periodically.
- Re-aim sprinklers that hit windows and the car.
Cleaning scale safely
Diluted white vinegar dissolves light mineral scale on many faucets and showerheads. Check the fixture maker's care instructions first, especially for coated finishes and natural stone, which acids can damage. Soak removable parts like aerators rather than scrubbing. If scale returns within days, that is a sign the water itself is worth testing.
Screen enclosures and pool areas
Many Florida homes have screened pool enclosures and lanais, and those surfaces collect spots from sprinklers and pool splash. Pool water is its own chemistry and leaves its own marks. If the spots are only around the pool, they are probably not about your tap water at all, and a softener on the house will not change them.
Wells and businesses
Private wells deliver untreated groundwater that can be hard. Businesses with water heaters, dishwashers and ice machines may soften for equipment protection even on county water. Living Water installs ion-exchange softening plants for both, sized from a test. See water softeners in Greenacres. Call, text or WhatsApp Jorge at (305) 793-5974.
