What the county already does
PBCWUD's 2025 report describes lime softening (lime is used to remove impurities and adjust pH), an ion exchange step that removes dissolved organic matter and color, filtration, and nanofiltration and reverse osmosis membranes. The report does not publish a hardness figure, and it does not say which of the four eastern plants serves which neighborhood. So the honest move is to measure at your tap. Jorge reads hardness in grains per gallon during the free test.
When a softener fits in Greenacres
- Private wells: untreated groundwater, often hard and carrying iron.
- Restaurants, salons, laundries, gyms and schools: water heaters, dishwashers, ice machines and washers benefit from softened water.
- A measured hardness that causes scale you are tired of cleaning.
How ion-exchange softening works
Resin beads trade calcium and magnesium for sodium or potassium. When the resin is loaded, the system regenerates with brine and rinses to the drain. Metered valves regenerate based on actual water use, which keeps salt use reasonable.
A softener does not remove chloramine. If your complaint is taste or smell, a filter is the right tool. See softener vs. filter in Greenacres.
Installation and HOA rules
Softeners need a drain for regeneration water and an outlet for the valve, usually near the main line in a garage. If you have a homeowners' association, check its rules on outdoor equipment first. Jorge confirms the location before recommending anything.
Sizing for a business
For a restaurant, salon, laundry, gym or school in Greenacres, sizing starts with daily water volume and the equipment you are protecting: water heaters, dishwashers, ice machines and washers. The quote should list capacity, regeneration settings and expected salt use, so you can see that the system is built for your actual load, not a generic size.
Sodium and drinking water
The county's eastern sodium results ranged from 18.2 to 49.7 ppm in 2023 sampling. An ion-exchange softener adds a little sodium in proportion to the hardness it removes. Households that prefer to avoid that can use potassium chloride, or keep an under-sink RO for drinking water. If you follow a sodium-restricted diet, ask your doctor.
